Cusco guide

About the city of Cusco

Cusco is the historic and archaeological capital of the Inca Empire, located 3400 meters above sea level in the heart of the Andes. Its architectural, symbolic, and cultural legacy makes it one of South America's most important destinations.

Imperial City

Living history between Inca walls and colonial streets

Before the arrival of the Spanish, Cusco was the capital of Tawantinsuyu, a political, administrative, and religious center planned with well defined urban functions.

Today it is Peru's main tourism hub and receives millions of visitors every year. Its structure reveals the Andean worldview and the Inca knowledge of engineering and territorial planning.

World Heritage and a unique cultural fusion

In 1983, Cusco's historic center was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inca foundations support churches, mansions, and colonial monuments, creating an open air museum.

Weather in Cusco

Dry season

It runs from part of April through May and October. Days are usually sunny, with 15 C to 20 C during the day and cold nights that can approach 0 C. It is ideal for hikes and archaeological visits.

Rainy season

It is concentrated between November and March, with stronger rains in January and February. Rain usually appears in the afternoon and the landscape becomes greener and lush.

How to get to Cusco

By plane

Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport receives daily flights from Lima, with an average duration of just over one hour.

By bus

From Lima, the overland trip can take between 20 and 22 hours. Stops in Arequipa or Puno can make the journey more comfortable.

By train

The Belmond Andean Explorer luxury route connects Cusco with Puno and Arequipa, combining Andean scenery and premium onboard service.

What to do

Cusco and its surroundings

The region combines adventure, living culture, archaeological sites, and Andean landscapes. It is best to organize excursions with acclimatization time for a safer experience.

01 Vinicunca, Rainbow Mountain

Famous for its natural mineral colors and located above 5000 meters, it is a full day excursion with unique mountain views.

02 Sacred Valley

It brings together traditional villages, craft markets, and archaeological sites such as Pisac and Ollantaytambo along the Urubamba River.

03 Waqrapukara

An archaeological complex on an impressive rock formation. Its name means horn shaped fortress and it offers history, spirituality, and panoramic views.

04 Machu Picchu

Peru's tourism icon and one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World. Advance planning is recommended because daily tickets are controlled.

05 Humantay Lake

A bright turquoise lake at the foot of snowy Salkantay. The trail is short, but located at high altitude.

06 Palcoyo

A more accessible alternative to Rainbow Mountain, with multicolored hills, an easier hike, and fewer visitors.

Plan your experience safely and strategically

Because of the altitude, acclimatizing for one or two days before intense activities is recommended. Stay hydrated, eat light, and walk at a moderate pace. Machu Picchu Travel organizes custom packages, professional assistance, and full support from arrival.
